If the image size is around 500 KB even at 7 or 8 MP; and if the resulting image looks grainy, try this to improve the quality of the picture:

Turn off the Auto mode. Change it to manual mode and select ISO 80 or ISO 100. If there is no improvement in the quality of the picture, try the other ISO options 200, 400, 800 or 1250. Note that larger values doesn't necessarily produce cleaner, sharper images.
